Uni is a big, interesting place. Your time at uni is when you make new friends and figure out the mysteries of the universe (not joking if you are taking a physics class!). However, it can also be quiet an intimidating place with a lot of obstacles of various kinds coming your way. It is in these kinds of situations where you most likely would need help from someone in uni. What a lot of students (both old and new) don’t realise is that universities in fact have a lot of places and resources you can go to in times of need. From dealing with technical issues such as wifi problems to handling personal feelings and emotions, there is always somewhere you can go. To ensure that you are aware of all the help you can get, here is a list of 5 places you can get help at in uni, if you need to.

5.Financial support services

Uni can be a pretty expensive affair when you consider everything that goes into working towards attaining that degree of yours. Financial support is there to ease the burden on those students who are on a tight rope in regards to their bills and finances. While they would not help with HECS or semester fees, they are willing to help you out with textbook costs and other bills in absolutely necessary circumstances

4. IT Centre

Whether its an issue with your uni account, or simply that you are having trouble connecting your device to the wifi, these guys are at your service throughout the day. They are equipped to help you out with all things tech so do not hesitate to reach out to your university’s IT guys in case you need a hand figuring out accounts and computers.

3. Peer support networks

Peer support networks have become essential in many of the universities across Australia. They allow experienced students to help newbies settle into uni life and exchange experiences and stories within the wider community. While they may not be sophisticatedly equipped to help out with complex problems, its always nice to have someone who can relate to you and provide tips on how to navigate through the first few weeks of uni.

2. Subject learning centres

Sometimes, our brains are just not wired to understand math or physics or concepts naturally. We do need a little bit of extra help. Again unis understand this and provide help centres for free such as math learning centres. They provide extra support from qualified educators who want to see your understanding visibly increase with every visit. When there is basically free tution as such, why not make use of it?

1.

Counselling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

Uni can be tough on the mental health of some. And that’s absolutely normal> In such circumstances, the university would not want you to suffer on your own which is why a lot of institutions have their own CAPS services, often free of charge. From providing you that little motivation you need to numerous stress management resources, CAPS usually has a vast array of services to offer, so make use of it to the maximum!

Also always remember your university’s student centre is always there to help out!

Therfore while uni is a whole new world, you don’t necessarily have to navigate through it alone. Everyone has their issues and concerns, whether academic or personal and we all need help to get through them. The university understands this and provides you with support in many possible ways so make use of them if needed. If you know any other avenue where students can go for help for certain difficulties, please do not hesitate to let us know! Until then, Peace out!
