Google the word Fashion. The top result would be Kim Kardashian and a piece of sheer cloth that she calls a ‘’fashionable outfit’’. Other results include the stereotypical ‘’ideal women’’ of unrealistic sizes, with surreally perfect skin dressed in skimpily clad clothes. The results are rounded off by designer clothes on the Paris fashion runway that some of us can’t even afford in our lifetime (or more like some of us are practical enough to not splurge $5000 on a designer wear jacket when here at Exodus wear we give you equally stylish AND customised jackets for less than one tenth that price).

Is that all what fashion is about? Where is the fashion for men? Who said fashion is ONLY for a certain set of people?

So what is fashion? Dictionary.com defines fashion as ‘’a prevailing custom or style of dressing, etiquette, socialising etc.’’. I don’t see any reliable source that says fashion is only for a certain set of people that meet a certain set of criteria. Fashion is for everyone. Everyone deserves to use it in a way to make THEMSELVES feel good. To make themselves feel presentable and beautiful. Everyone, especially us in the late teens and early twenty’s feel pressured to look ‘’hot’’ in a certain way.

Guess what, fashion is when you embrace the natural features that makes you you. The beauty that defines you in your own, unique way. So here are 7 misconceptions about fashion and a few tips on how to ACTUALLY follow fashion and trends.

1. Fashion misconception Number 1 –> You don’t have to follow a trend down to the wire.

Open Elle magazine. It says Khaki is in for the season. And there are pictures of models in elegantly cut khaki shorts. Its not necessary that in order to be following that trend you must wear khaki shorts as well. Tweak it to suit yourself. Maybe you prefer something longer. Then go for a flared khaki skirt. Maybe choose a jumpsuit that does justice to your figure and makes you feel good. Throw on a suitable jacket or jumper and voila, that is you comfortably and fashionably following the trend.

2. Don’t feel obligated to show or hide more than what you are comfortable with

It’s your body. You decide how much to flaunt. You decide what makes you feel sexy. No one gets to tell you that you dress too slutty or your dressing is too prudish. Choose a piece of clothing that makes you feel like a mysterious beauty. Girls don’t necessarily have to show cleavage while guys don’t necessarily have to flaunt giant muscles. Dress elegantly in a way that makes you feel like the man or woman you are.

3. Choose colours and style that flaunt your figure.

All shapes are beautiful. Choose styles that boast your pride and confidence in your look. More on the curvy side? Block colours, peplums, wrap dresses… The choice is endless.. Have a slimmer figure? Dresses with the right cut, can amplify curves in the right spot and do wonders. Boot cuts or straight cut jeans are also good options depending on your personal taste. The main point is to try on different designs, different shades of different colours, look in the mirror and decide which on you feel the most confident in. At the end of the day remember, you are dressing for you.

4. Try on different sizes.

Not all stores tend to follow identical sizing conventions. While you might be a size 8 with one brand, chances are that might not be the case with another. So always keep your mind open and try on the next size above or below if something doesn’t fit right. Remember, the size is just a number. It doesn’t dictate your fashion taste or your looks in general.

5. Make your own decisions.

After all you must decide how you want to portray yourself to the world. So decide which look suits you best. There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking advice from a professional or a friend. But if you are not feeling that advice in any case, go with your gut instinct on what you want to wear or buy. And be confident in your choices. Again, choose wisely and make an educated choice. Fashion is an art where every individual has their own take and their own rules.

6. Go for accessories.

Accessories can never fail you. Want to make a bold statement? Go for a daring necklace or an eye popping pair of earrings. Want it to subtlely complement your outfit? Then go for a dainty bracelet or so. Layer with a jacket or a coat to jazz up your winter/spring look. You know what you like. Look at trends and see which one suits your taste the best.

7. You don’t have to look glammed up 24/7

Your everyday fashion tells more about you than you think. A denim jacket, tshirt, black jeans and boots can make your everyday look the one that most people are after. Simplicity is sometimes the better way to go. Working basics according to your individual features is an art that a lot of people sometimes get wrong. So see how you can rock that plain tee and jeans when you are off to the mall.

So there you go. There are an infinite number of trends and an infinite number of fashion tips online. And you are not obligated to follow each and every one of those. Select according to your personal tastes and voila you can never go wrong. If you think that it is hard to decide on what looks best for you, professional stylists with years of experience are always there to help you figure out what look is yours. There is always room for doing justice to the body that mother nature has given you. So don’t feel disheartened looking at ‘’perfect models’’ on runways and magazines. We all know there is always more than what meets the eye.
