Years after you finish school, you’ll probably have thrown out, donated or sold most pieces of your school uniform. In all likelihood, the only remnant of your school day style will be your Year 12 jersey (or jumper, or jacket!), featuring the super-cool jersey nickname you chose.
Your Year 12 jersey will become a staple for lazy days around the house, a quick dash to the supermarket and even for wearing to uni when you’re feeling nostalgic for high school. So it’s really important that you choose a jersey nickname you won’t come to regret!
Here are five ways to ensure you choose a jersey nickname that you won’t be embarrassed to sport when school is over:
- Pick something you’re actually known as
If your name is Joseph and everyone calls you Joe, your Year 12 jersey is not the place to have “Joey” as your nickname! If no one has ever called you what you’re considering, then steer clear of that name. It’s not a true representation of your high school identity.
- Don’t pick something based on your current relationship
You may feel like the person you’re dating in Year 11 is “the one”, but in all likelihood that relationship won’t survive for too long after high school. If you break up, it would suck if you’d chosen a nickname highlighting your relationship! If Joseph is dating Ellie Carpenter, he should NOT get “Mr Carpenter” on his jersey, or “I <3 Ellie”. Odds are, he’ll come to regret it if the relationship ends. Your jersey is a memento of your whole school experience, not one relationship. Plus, imagine the awkwardness if you break up before school ends! Just don’t risk it.
- Ask your friends for advice
If you really can’t think of something, ask your friends! They’ll be able to help you remember funny moments from school, which might help you choose a jersey nickname. You can also ask your friends to veto any stupid ideas you come up with! Just be careful: don’t give your friends free reign to choose your name or you might end up with something embarrassing!
- Focus on your long-lasting passions
It’s all well and good to choose a jersey nickname that reflects something you really care about, but if you’re going to do that, pick something you’ve cared about for at least a few years of high school. If Joseph loves rowing, and has loved it since Year 9, it’s a great idea for him to get something like “OARsome”. Even if he ends up stopping rowing, he’ll probably still be happy to wear that jersey because it reflects something that he was passionate about for much of high school. However, if Joseph has just watched Parks and Recreation for the first time the month before choosing his nickname and he decides he wants “Ron Swanson”, that’s probably a bad idea. It’s not reflective of his high school experience!
- If all else fails, go with your last name
Your surname is a classic thing to have on the back of your jersey. After all, jerseys are really sportswear and that’s what athletes have on the backs of their jerseys! It might not be the funniest or most interesting choice, but if you’re going for longevity, I can promise you’ll never regret your surname on your jersey!
