Coding and algorithms is the language of the future. Whether you desire to be a magazine director, biologist or economist, every industry imaginable will speak in numbers. That’s because business and organisations are increasingly dependent on online services and information systems to function and exist at all. Therefore, coding is a crucial skill to obtain to make sure you have the know-how and the expertise to excel in any career that you choose.

Fortunately, nowadays, the Australian curriculum understands the dire importance of this skill and is embedded already into almost every learning subject. “Coding across the curriculum” is an initiative to subtly but steadily introduce coding and algorithmic skills into every teaching subject whether it be English, Mathematics or Science, so that students will be equipped when transitioning into their trades, university degrees and further careers.

However, what if you want to take the further step, and become absolutely fluent in coding? There are a few things that you can do to guarantee you’re an expert at coding before you graduate in your final year.

Enrol to Technology Subjects

It might seem simple enough but if you have a passion for computing and technology in general, when you have the chance, choose technology subjects as your electives in Year 9 and beyond. The most notable subject would of course be Information and Software Technology, which focuses entirely on coding and the importance and integration of Information Systems. This can also be taken in your final years as part of your HSC. However, some other subjects that would have certain aspects of coding and algorithmic mathematics would be Design and Technology, Graphics Technology and Industrial Technology. If you are unsure how coding dense these subjects are, why not ask your careers advisor or the head of department?

Take Classes

If you have the time, and the extra cash, why not make sure you have a in-depth knowledge of coding, take that extra step and take afternoon or weekend classes in coding. With the importance and prevalence of such skills, classes are not hard to find and there are to be sure at least a couple of options at your local community centre or city centre.

Self-teach and Play Code

If you don’t have the time or money to commit to a weekly class, then why not teach yourself. You can easily purchase “Coding for Dummies” at your local book-store and slip it into your study timetable. And hour or two a week will be ample time to guarantee fluency of code by the end of the year. Better yet, why not teach yourself code, by playing it. A quick search online and you’ll be able to find an array of free (and purchasable) online games that teach you coding whilst having fun. Some of these games are marketed towards a younger audience so make sure to challenge yourself and practice your skills when you feel confident enough!
