For the Love of Custom is where we share our love of all things customised and personalised! Since we are a company that specialises in creating custom outerwear, it’s no surprise that we also want to shine a light on the growing mass-customisation trend. We’ll be featuring different companies that are at the cutting edge of customisation.
Disrupt Sports
This week’s post stars Disrupt Sports. Disrupt sports is a company that specialises in creating custom sports gear. It was founded by Gary Elphick and is based in Bondi beach, making it an Australian company. The vision of Disrupt Sports is to help people all over the world to design sports gear that is as individual as themselves! Disrupt sports is bridging the gap between artistry and sports, allowing creativity to be expressed through sports.
Disrupt Sports uses 3D printing technology to allow customers to completely design and add almost anything to their boards. What started off as just surfboards, has now expanded to skateboards, surfboards and yoga mats! They also allow you to personalise a whole range of balls like soccer balls and netballs. Because of the complete personalisation that Disrupt Sports supports, there are limitless possibilities to what you can put on your board.
To demonstrate the whole process, we’re going to be creating a custom surfboard. Of course, you start by choosing the shape of the board. Once you have picked the basic shape of the board you have the ability to change the model as well as the size of the board. This means that the board can be fitted to your exact specifications.
In terms of the actual design of the surfboard, there’s plenty to choose from! Disrupt Sports have collaborated with artists to create designs specifically for Disrupt. You can choose from these designs or upload your own. The only thing with this is to make sure that it’s a very high resolution as it’s going to be blown up to surfboard-size. You then have the option to add text. You can change the font, colour and orientation of this completely! Never underestimate clever placement of text in your designs.
If you don’t feel like customising your own board, there’s still a ‘Shop’ option at Disrupt Sports. The shop features similar designs as when you design your own but you won’t be able to change the model and size of the boards as easily. However, the Shop is more of a way to give you ideas for your own creation as they all lead to the customization page.
One of the winning aspects of Disrupt Sports is the wide variety of artist collaborators. The art ranges from more abstract prints to street-art-style graphic pieces. The designs are made especially for the boards and mats at Disrupt and so they are guaranteed to look good. Artists include Brisbane street artist Steen as well as textile artist Nicole McCartney. There are some beautiful designs done especially for Disrupt and they’re really worth checking out!
If you’re in Bondi then you’ll be able to visit Disrupt Sports’ showroom. You’ll be able to see the display boards as well as customise your own stuff right there on the spot! The showroom features specialised technology and touch screens for you to design your own boards and you’ll be able to view your masterpiece in 3D.
We feel so inspired by Disrupt Sports and the other Australian companies specialising in customised goods. It’s so great to see so many Australian companies take the lead in this movement! We hope that you will check out Disrupt Sports and sign up for $10 off!
Exodus Wear also want customers to have an experience when they’re buying and be able to own things that they were able to have a hand in creating.
