The third episode of ABC’s My Year 12 Life continues following the stressful and studious year of fourteen students in their final year in school. Like the previous episode, this half-hour, completely vlog-based tv show focused on a handful of the students. It focused on a selection of key issues that the students faced in the first few weeks of the school year.

Parental Pressures and Family Life

A lot of this episode for all students focused around the pressure from parents and family dynamics that effect their concentration in school. Alfie voices his concerns about disappointing his strict and influential mother, who only wishes for him to do well in school. The episode raises the questions of different parenting techniques and how it can affect the year of study ahead. Zoe comments that her mother has never enforced discipline in her house, and she sees the setback in that, concluding that sometimes it was hard to maintain motivation and didn’t want her sister, who has different priorities, to face the HSC without a guiding hand. Zoe also recognises the struggle and distraction it is, switching from both her separated parents houses, disrupting her study and motivation.

This episode also outlines the stress the HSC has on all members of the family. Kayla outlines how her heavy workload and stress causes arguments with both her parents, who only want to support her, and her siblings.

Balancing a Social Life

Another big issue in the episode is the temptation and struggle of sustaining a social life in your HSC year. Alfie, who finds high school a struggle, says that his weekend social life has an impact on his school attendance and concentration at his school. Zoe and Kayla both agree that they have to sacrifice their social life, just to keep on top of the already immense workload that they receive at the beginning of the school term. Ben, who is coming of age, is more focused on his birthday party and has tense discussions with his mother about drinking alcohol responsibly, especially in such a crucial and formative school year.
