I know what you’re thinking…There’s about ten superhero movies released per year, so why bother making a Top 10. We all know the classics: Batman, Superman, The X-men and Spiderman. Sure, those movie adaptations are great, (or maybe only the first five), but the world of comics is not just a DC and Marvel domain. Chances are your favourite movies of all time also originated in comic form.

Piled below is, what I believe, are the Top 10 recent comic to movie adaptations. These movies so happen to be the perfect mix for a killer, kick-ass marathon so why not add them on your list of movies to watch if you haven’t already.

The Avengers

Top 10 Comic to Movie Adaptations

Yes, the first on our list IS a marvel adaptation but it does need some recognition. Though we are spoilt today with movies starring more than one major superhero and super villain, there was a time when it was one superhero to one stand-alone movie (Remember those days?). The Avengers released in 2012 was the first of it’s kind, a massive kick-ass blockbuster with our favourite superheroes all on the same screen. It was worthy of the comics, keeping the core members part of the clique and spurred a momentum for more group superhero adaptations, such as DC’s version of the super-group, Justice League.

300 and 300: Rise of an Empire

Top 10 Comic to Movie Adaptations

Yes, believe it or not, this gruesome pair of movies once belonged in the comic realm. And it’s not hard to imagine, with it’s artistic gore and dark, moody colours, it’s perfect for a grisly comic. The original limited edition comics, five in total, were first published in 1998. Though criticised to be historically inaccurate, the storyline of the Spartans is a refreshing change to the classic superhero adventures. The creator Frank Miller was also responsible for the Sin City comic series which is another inclusion on this list.

V for Vendetta

If you’ve seen the award-winning movie, starring Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving, then you would probably have already guessed it was once a comic. Set in a not so distant and not so far-fetched dystopian future, where the government is a autocratic dictatorship with constant surveillance and control, it’s extremely easy to visualise on paper and picture. Due to it’s insightful dialogue and orchestra like action, the movie does the comic series remarkable justice.

Sin City and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Top 10 Comic to Movie Adaptations

Sin City and it’s later sequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill For are ground-breaking film adaptations of their comic counterpart, Sin City. Created by Frank Miller, the movie embraces the comics neo-noir and dark style perfectly, giving the film it’s iconic and awarded black and white and sporadic colour features. Just like the comics, both movies are dark, twisted and ironic, perfect for those that appreciate unique art form.

Hellboy

Top 10 Comic to Movie Adaptations

If you like your superheroes a little less charismatic and a little more broken, then Hellboy is the comic to movie adaptation for you. The film perfectly illustrates the colourful art of the comics mingled with the dark themes within the storyline. The movie focuses around a group of unique and troubled ‘heroes’, with Hellboy, a demon, as the main reluctant hero.

Deadpool

Top 10 Comic to Movie Adaptations

Another Marvel entry, but one that is definitely worth it. Released last year, Deadpool followed it’s comic counterpart and broke the  fourth wall with the audience, something rarely seen in mainstream superhero movies. This rude, wacky and hilarious movie keeps the original humour of the comics, whilst also making fun of itself. It’s the first of it’s kind: a superhero movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Josie and the Pussycats

Top 10 Comic to Movie Adaptations

So, depending how old you are you might not have heard of this movie. It’s a bit of a cult classic but a fantastic adaptation none the less. Before you go on and google it, yes, they are the same music group from the brand new show Riverdale, but in 2001 they got their own stand-alone movie. The storyline follows the drama of the band as they sign to a record label and leave their small town of Riverdale and make it big in NYC! It keeps the all-american feel of the comics whilst giving it a 90’s twist!

Kick-Ass

kingofwallpaper.com

Kick-Ass, adapted from the comic of the same name by publisher Icon Comics, is a hilarious vigilante-hero story about a teenage girl superhero. It’s humour is found in the perfect marriage between teen drama and classic superhero movie, and as the name suggests the movie is interlinked with classic kick-ass superhero action. It’s funny, light but with powerful dialogue and drama.

Men in Black Trilogy

Top 10 Comic to Movie Adaptations

Yes, believe it or not, the Men in Black movie series, featuring Will Smith, were once comic books. With it’s kooky alien agency and thus weird mix of alien characters there’s no doubt it would be perfect for a comic series. The movie has all the action a comic/movie needs, but keeps the supernatural and sci-fi themes light with relatable humour.

Kingsman: The Secret Service

Top 10 Comic to Movie Adaptations

imdb.com

If you love spy movies, then you’ll love Kingsman: The Secret Service. However, unlike most spy movies, this adaptation takes a leaf out of Deadpool and doesn’t take itself too serious, parodying the classic stereotypes of spy films. This film is colourful, quirky and just a little bit naughty and does it’s comic series counterpart some serious justice.
