Yeah been there, a girl had my dress at both the year 11 and year 12 ball grrrrr! So now you’ve turned to online shopping – ah a dangerous business, dresses are expensive, where do you shop, how can you choose? Don’t worry with my online shopping guide you will have the formal dress of your dreams in no time!

- Check the return policy: Most online stores have good return policies. But make sure you check before purchasing – you don’t want to get stuck with an expensive dress that you hate. It needs to say that you will get a full refund upon return.
- Check the size guide: each dress should have a size guide next to it to help you determine your correct size. Grab a tape measure and check your measurements before ordering.
- Order early: postage even within Australia can take 2 weeks, so make sure you order really early so that you have time to return the dress and look for another one if it’s no good.
- Order multiple dresses/sizes from the same site: assuming the website has a good returns policy, you should order a few different dresses to try on (or different sizes of the same dress if you are unsure). Once you pick your favourite you can return the other dresses and get your money back – fyi you will need mum or dads credit card and permission for this.
- Buy from brands you know: because a) you know they are good quality and b) their sizing for all their clothing is the same so if you wear a 12 in their tops you will likely be a 12 in their dresses.
- Try on different styles in a store: once you find a style that suits you (A-line, poofy, off the shoulder, halter-neck, strapless, baby doll) you will be able to narrow down your online search!
