School’s out, summer’s in. After the euphoria of doing nothing has past within the first 4 days, the mind straightaway heads to “what should I do these holidays?” town. Have any inkling of how to make this a special and/or productive summer? If you are still scratching your heads with no answer, read on for a few ideas on how to spend your summer holidays.

Ways to make your summer an adventurous and memorable one

1. Head outdoors for a weekend

Camping, hiking, trekking or even just doing the Bondi to Coogee walk. Australia has endless options when it comes to outdoor activities, a lot of which appeals to youth. The biggest advantage is that a lot of outdoor activities don’t burn a hole in our pockets (that is if you have the necessary gear you might need). Catching up with friends around a bonfire is an experience like no other. Or release a balloon lantern into the sky and observe the tranquil beauty in a quiet camping area. Let your imagination run wild on how to make a camping trip enjoyable.

2. Water activities

There are water activities for ll, from those who love their adrenaline rush to those who prefer to stay in safe zones (like fishing). Canoeing and kayaking are very popular options if you are feeling wet and wild. With the number of beautiful water bodies around Australia, surfing, jet skiing and scuba diving (especially in Queensland) are things that you must try out this summer (again, only if you are feeling adventurous. Do not force yourself to do such activities, especially if you are an amateur.

3. Travel around Australia

Australia gives you everything, from desert treks to caving to scuba diving. When you’ve got such a variety in 1 country, why not go explore this giant island? Go around Tassie. Do the great Indian Ocean drive. Or do one of those ultimate winery experiences. Whatever it is, you will definitely find something that tickles the inner adventurer in you.

4. Climb the Harbour bridge

While this is more like just a touristy activity that costs a pricey $160, it is definitely something that will make a precious memorable memory for anyone and everyone (obviously not recommended for those afraid of heights).

5. Get in shape with a unique 30 day challenge

If you are looking to get in shape this summer, why not gather a few friends and do it in a memorable way? The challenge is to come up with a daily workout and to do the workout in a different location everyday. Can be simple locations such as different parks, in the tennis court etc. Again, get creative!

For those looking for a more productive than adventurous summer

1. the most obvious : get a job

This is probably at the top of the list for most of summer break students. Get a job (either to make some money or to gain invaluable experience). While its obviously easier said than done, summer break provides you a stress free time period that actually allows you to properly focus on a serious part time or full time summer job.

2. Learn a new sport or instrument

Learning a new sport or instrument not only teaches you that particular activity, but also allows you to develop and practice different sets of skills in different combinations. Knowledge gained from such activities goes well beyond its physical aspect. So get out there and find something that grabs your curiosity.

3. Develop your cooking skills

When given the chance, why wouldn’t you want to do so? This can either be done at home following self help recipes, books and videos or joining an actual cooking class. Cooking can be an expression of the soul hence why not let your soul free through flavours this summer?

4. Read

In today’s world, we neglect reading so much that we literally have no idea the open doors it provides for the mind. So read to your heart’s content and let your imagination free through the eyes of different characters in any fiction or non fiction reading material.

5. Volunteer

The best way to feel good about your summer and give back to the community is to volunteer. You can volunteer in any way, from walking dogs to doing admin work. It always puts a smile on someone’s face when people realise that there are still a few humans who are generous enough to dedicate some time working for the community.

These are just a few ideas for those of you feeling lost as to what to do with your life for the next 3 months. Obviously there are millions of things you can do to make your summer a fun and memorable one. If you are doing something else that is worthy of a mention, please let us know . Hope this summer holds great memories waiting to be unlocked by you. Until then, peace out!
